Clinical and Statistical Observations in 181 Cases of Burn Patients

Abstract
During the past 5 year period from August 1964 to August 1969, 181 cases of burn patients were
treated at Surgical department, Woo Sok University Hospital.
The author reviewed and discussed our clinical experience of thermal injuries.
Clinical analysis of these 181 cases of burn patients was carried out and summarized as follows:
1) Males were affected more often than females, the incidence being 129 cases(71.2%) and 52
cases(28.8%).
2) seasonal distribution: In March. April and May 50 cases(27.6%), in June, July and August
37 cases(20.4%), in September, October and November 29 cases(16.1%), and in December, Jan
uary and February 65 cases(35.9%).
3) The cases of burn were tabulated as follows: scalding 110 cases(60.9%), flame 52 cases
(28.9%), chemical 9 cases(4.9%), electric 6 cases(3.5%) and Co gas poisoning 3 cases(1.8%)
in order.
4) Among 181 cases of burn patients, 31 patients(17.1%) were under 10% of body surface, 10
patients(56.4%) 11¡­30%, 21 patients(11.6%) 31¡­50%, 12 patients(6.7%) 51¡­70%, 9 patients
(5.0%) 71¡­90%, and 6 patients(3.2%) were over 91% of body surface.
5) The predominating organisms cultured out of infected wounds of 32 cases were staphylococcus
aureus 16(50%), E.Coli 8(25%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa 7(21.9%), Staphylococcus albus
6(18.8%) and ¥â-hemolytic streptococcus 4(12.5%).
6) The most frequent complications were wound infection(19.3%), pulmonary complications(8.3%)
and genitourinary infections(8.3%).
7) The overall mortality in this series was 23.7%(43 cases) and the mortality rates were high
in children and old age group.
